TRE: Tension Release Exercises

TRE® allows your body to restore and heal from physical, emotional, and mental stress. Developed by Dr. David Berceli, Ph.D., TRE® is a simple technique used by thousands of people in over 35 countries! The technique utilizes a set of basic exercises to release accumulated stress or tension from the body by evoking a controlled muscular shaking process called neurogenic muscle tremors. ​

Some of the many reported benefits of this practice include: improved sleep​, decreased stress and anxiety, increased relaxation, and improved awareness of the body and mind.

What is stress?

Stress is any experience that requires a change in our normal coping mechanisms. Unfortunately, it has become part of our everyday lives. We experience it on a daily basis, yet we don’t realize how much it affects us.

How does chronic stress/tension affect us?

When we feel stressed, our bodies respond with physical changes to help us meet whatever challenge we face. Our hearts beat faster, our blood pressure and blood sugar rises, our digestion slows, and our muscles tighten. Once the circumstance has passed, our bodies should quickly return to homeostasis (its equilibrium). The problems start when stressful events become a constant and we don’t have the ability to return to homeostasis; instead we stay chronically stressed.

  • Nearly 90% of all doctor’s visits are due to stress
  • Anxiety, depression, pain (headache/migraine, back pain, abdominal pain), high blood pressure, diarrhea, constipation, weight gain, more frequent infections, sleep problems, pregnancy complications are all symptoms of stress
  • Stress can make people easily susceptible to self-harming behaviors – smoking, alcohol and drug use, overeating, cutting
  • Stress increases risk of disease and/or disability
  • Stress causes irritability, social isolation and harms relationships
  • Stress can decrease focus and impair memory

How can TRE® help relieve stress? After Dr. Berceli witnessed trauma on a mass scale (during wartime), he designed a series of simple exercises to turn on the natural human shaking response that signals a return to safety and calm. By activating this self-induced therapeutic tremor with mindful attention to physical and psychological comfort, he found a release of stress that provided lasting, positive results.

For more than 20 years, Dr. Berceli has been teaching people across the globe how to harness this innate ability to heal trauma, release stress, and reclaim health. The TRE® mechanism, or shaking ability, exists in all mammals and humans. It is the body’s most organic and natural way of unravelling contracted or tight stress patterns, as well as reducing the charge of stress hormones and un-healthy chemical build up, bringing the body back to homeostasis.

Group Workshops or Private Sessions?

Which TRE® session is best for you? The answer depends on your levels of stress and your personality.

Private sessions are recommended for those that are very tight, prefer 1:1 instruction, and/or are working with serious trauma or PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).

Group classes assist in supporting your growth through a community environment. The energy in a group class can be very beneficial, especially for those struggling to relieve stress and tension from a busy lifestyle.
